Designing the perfect playroom for your kids takes time and planning, but once it's done it will bring you hours of quiet time in the rest of your house. Isn't that worth it! There is an actual formula you can follow to make sure you create an environment that entices your kiddies to want to play and play and play. This doesn't necessarily have to cost an arm and a leg. This can be done by choosing the right kid's furniture first, then getting the fun stuff at discounted rates at flea markets, garage sales or thrift shops and setting up the room in just a way that your kids will want to spend hours in there.
First Steps in Planning your Playroom Design
Write a List of your Kid's Favorite Hobbies: Does your child like to draw, paint, play music, do puppet shows, play board games, do puzzles, play sports, watch TV and play video games etc... Make this list very extensive to include everything your child enjoys doing.
Write a List of Items you can Get that Match your Child's Hobbies: If your child likes to draw and paint, consider getting an easel, craft table or art station. If your child likes to do puppet shows get a small puppet theater and some puppets or improvise and get puppets and a cardboard box. If games and puzzles are your child's thing then put board games and puzzles on the list. If your kid is really into video games, consider getting a TV for the playroom and if sports are a priority, you could get an over the door nerf basketball hoop, dart board, ping pong or pool table, depending on how much space you have to work with. If your child's a musical genius, why not invest in some bongo drums, guitar or karaoke machine.
Second Step is Choosing the Right Kid's Furniture for the Room
Now that you have a list of hobbies and things that match, it's time to consider your child's comfort. First, assess the room size. If it's large then you can create specific play stations around the room which is actually the best way to set-up a playroom to really encourage lots of playtime. If the room is a little smaller, be creative and create a few separate play areas combining several hobbies. In a larger space, make one corner dedicated to art, another to music, another to reading, another to puppet shows and entertaining and so on.
Important! *** Kids don't play with things they can't see, so it's imperative to make sure you set-up the room so that all of the fun stuff is in clear view.
That being said, it's also important to create a comfortable place to play. If your child enjoys reading then consider getting a kid's chair with a reading lamp, so he has his own special reading spot. You could even combine the reading and art area, by putting a kid's table and chair set in the room and shelves with art supplies on one side and books on the other. This way he could use the table and chair set for both hobbies.
Next, if your playroom has a TV then you'll need some seating. If you plan to use the room too, you should consider a couch or chairs that are big enough for adults, but if it's strictly a kid space then consider getting cute lounge chairs made for kids. Get enough so that visiting friends have a place to sit too.
Remember, you'll also need some storage shelves to hold the toys and games, so consider this when looking at kid's furniture and get a storage unit for each play station in the room. Open shelves are the best so that kids can see their toys. Dark Bins are a No-No, because a toy out of sight is a toy out of mind and toys in non-clear bins will get forgotten!
Once you've figured out what kid's furniture you need and which themes you'll use in each play station, it's time to search for the fun stuff.
On to Flea Markets, Thrift Shops and Garage Sales you Go!
Now that you have the room set up, kid's furniture in place, and your plan of what you need, it's time to go shop using your handy list. If you've decided to create music, art, game and reading stations in the playroom then consolidate items from your original list in just those categories. Head to the store or flea market and start looking around for things on your list.
Good Idea!***Consider creating a playroom when it's close to your child's birthday then send out a list of specific items you'd like people to get that go along with your playroom theme. This is a cost effective way to create the perfect play space for your child and if he gets things for his birthday he'll be more apt to want to play with them.
Last Step to Creating the Perfect Playroom for your Kids
This may sound a bit hokie, but go with it because it works. Stand in the center of the playroom. Close your eyes and picture each play space separately. Think about the fun toys, games or supplies you bought for each spot. Now picture how the items need to be displayed to really entice your child to play with them. Do you want puppets hanging on a tree stand or pegs on the wall? Having puppets cutely hanging on the wall would definitely entice your child to play with them often. Do you want art supplies in clear bins so your child knows exactly where his paints are? Do you want musical instruments hung on hooks or on open shelves, so they're easily accessible when your little musician wants to play some tunes? Do you want books on a shelf that's right next to the reading chair? The placement of toys, games and supplies is essential in creating the best playroom possible!
Final Thoughts: When creating your child's playroom, put yourself in his place. Design the room to provide effortless play time, making everything easily accessible and out in the open. Provide a spot where the fun can take place such as: an art table, reading chair, rock n roll stage, puppet theater, game table etc... Kids have huge imaginations. They love to play and play and play and if you give them a room that's made to spark imagination, inspire musical talents and encourage fun hobbies then your child will blossom into a thriving adult in later years and you'll get to enjoy some peace and quite along the way.
